Winter Favourite and Current Fav Brand

I don’t believe in writing about something until I find a product that’s worth shouting about. In my last post I mentioned that ive incorporated a vitamin c serum into my skincare regime, using every morning underneath my usual moisteriser.   I have now used this serum for the past 3 months each morning and I am still so impressed by it.  The serum I have been using is the Balance Active Formula Vitamin C Power serum, pictured here (its a real shame that I didnt take before and after pics of my skin since using it but will remeber to do this for future posts):

Vitamin C Power Serum

What can I say about this amazing serum?, for a start I love the brand. It doesn’t advertise much and doesn’t invest heavily in branding, so your are not paying for basic ingredient (many many – too many to mention brands have products made up of cheap basic ingredients that are proven to work, rename the ingredients and sell them at extremely high prices, what you’re paying for with some brands are not fancy ingredients, but the branding and advertising costs).. rant over, back to Balance Active. This brand seems different in a way that the product range takes ingredients that are proven to work such as hyaluronic acid and vitamin C and sells them without the extortionate price tag.  The results I have found have been the same if not better. Using Vitamin C each morning has rid me of my usual winter dry flaky skin and replaced it with smoother more clear skin. I have used this for 3 months and will do until it stops working. It has completely faded some old acne scars, and has lightened some discoloration in some areas so that my skin looks a bit more eventoned.  I have seen visible results however this isnt the only reason to use vitamin C. It is a really good antioxidant so that all the toxins and free radicals that the skin is exposed to will have a less of an effect due to vitamin c protecting the skin. The good thing about it as that you could still change your moisteriser as this is only to be worn underneath. I also think the vitamin c in this serum has been stabilised in some way as doesnt seem to ‘go off’ once the bottles been opened.

The serum itself takes around 10 seconds to sink in and doesn’t leave greasy film as i’ve found with some serums, it also hasnt broke me out in spots how some others have. It’s really really good for dark circles but this will only be noticed after around 2 weeks use every day.

I will surely use the other products by this brand especially the moiserisers and will let you know what I think of them.

Favourite mask of 2015!

I thought i would share with you over the coming posts some of my favourite products of 2015 that i discovered in the year. My current favourite mask is PURE super grape miracle glow clay mask. I havent used anything from the PURE range before and found it stocked at M&S, although i had read in a beauty article that this is a good clay mask.

Having not used a clay mask for a number of years i didnt know what to expect of this product, but i was pleasently suprised. It dried up within 10 minutes to a hard clay, it has exfoliating beads to slough off all the dead skin whilst you wash it off. Unlike some clay masks this is really effortless to wash off. It leaves skin clearer looking, softer and brighter. The effects of this mask also get better the more you use it. I have been using this twice a week and before nights out as it does give a good glow to skin. My only gripe is that the 50ml mask finishes quite quickly (i get around 10 uses out of 50ml, but you could only use a thin layer to get more) however as its so effective and only £12 i would definatly rebuy this. Overall its the best mask i have used for a while!

Guinot Skincare Review

Hey Folks!!

I was recently lucky enough to be sent a whole bunch of sample sized Guinot products from a salon that I was registered with.  I went there for a treatment a long time ago, so was very surprised and delighted that I was still on their mailing list.. and that I get to try some products from the french skincare brand Guinot,  I’ve not tried anything from the skincare line before, although I did have a guinot facial years ago with said salon.

I received 3ml sample sizes that lasted around 1 week and I used continually for a week (I personally think that one week is plenty of time to try out any product).

Longue Vie Yeux (lifting eye cream, that treats dark circles, skin sagging and wrinkles)

My favourite of all the products. It faded out dark circles on first use, and is very hydrating for winter months. I’m not sure about the effect it has on wrinkles, but I do think it has a lifting effect from first use.  I will continue to use this eye cream to see if it’s a temporary change in dark circles or if it continues to work long term.

888 Night Cream.  (actually called Creme Riche Vital 888)

After one weeks use, I have noticed a very subtle brightening affect, not sure if it’s the cream or the fact that I’ve just had more sleep this week!  I think this cream probably works after a couple of weeks and is definitely not a quick fix for tired looking skin.

Neck Cream

Again, I’m not sure if this works or not, mostly because I’m not the target group for this product which I suspect it is aimed at over 50’s age group. As I don’t have any skin concerns in this area I haven’t noticed any change.

Gommage Biologique (cream exfoliator, without grains)

I left this on for 10 minutes before washing it off. It goes on very dry and turns to oil as its massaged in. It can be used around the eye area (rare for an exfoliator).  I didn’t notice my skin being any smoother and i’m not sure why this is a popular product in the guinot range.  I will use it a few more times to see if skin is any smoother/brighter, but it wasn’t after one use.

Hydra Tendre wash off cleansing cream

I probably wouldn’t ever spend great deal on a cleanser because I find that they all do pretty much all do the same thing.  It took make-up off and was none drying, however there are many oil cleansers out there that do the same and come with a lower price tag. Personally I like oil cleaners such as Loreal miracle cleansing oil and Liz earle cleanse and polish.

2 Easy steps to concealing dark circles effortlessly

Helloo readers…. Today I am going to share with you an amazingly easy trick that most make up artists use and have done so for a number of years since this product first came on the market.   The product I am talking about is orange coloured corrector.

Some companies that sell the orange corrector in their make-up range may also call this product orange concealer. I actually prefer the word corrector, as the product is to be worn as the first step on dark circles, before the concealer is applied on top of it.

The product that I decided to test is the NYX Above and Beyond Full Coverage Concealer in the shade Orange. I was excited to find out that NYX products are now sold in most big branch Next stores here in the UK since late 2013.

The orange concealer is the very first product that I am trying from the NYX make up range.  My local Next store is Fosse Park Leicester actually did not have this in stock so I purchased this online, although the range in the store was quite good (there jumbo eye shadow pencils look amazing for the price as well as the lipsticks).

Why do Orange colour correctors work on dark circles?
Colour correctors are used to neutralise the underlying colour that you are trying to ‘correct’. Using colour wheels, Orange is the opposite to blue and purple on the colour wheel, hence why it is a good colour to neutralise blue/purple under eye circles and bruised skin. In order for it to work well, blend the colour corrector and apply a normal concealer on top, however ensure that the concealer is an exact match to your skin tone for best effects.

So onto the result …. and did the orange concealer have an affect on my dark circles??

I’m happy to say that using the orange concealer with normal concealer on top did seem to cover darkness better than concealer alone! Now that I’ve discovered this trick, I would probably always use orange concealer for times where ill be doing makeup for a special occasion.

I would recommend the NYX orange concealer as its only £6! It blends quite well and doesn’t budge on my skin, most importantly it doesn’t show any orange tinge once my normal concealer is on top.  I really like this concealer and i’m quite impressed, ill definitely be trying other NYX make up products as the quality seems good for the price.

Looking at the above pictures, the one on the bottom is me without orange concealer and just wearing my normal concealer which is quite a light concealer. The picture on the top is me wearing my usual light concealer with orange concealer underneath it. I could see that the orange concealer did work and made my normal concealer appear a bit better.
I would also add that the orange concealer is very compatible with olive/asian/indian skintones.

Tumeric – the spice for skin!

Within ayurvedic medicine, (a form of alternative medicine, native to the Indian subcontinent), the benefits of using turmeric within our diets and applying topically as part of a skincare regime, has been long known.

Turmeric is a super spice that is reportedly stronger than vitamin E and C, therefore making it beneficial for the immune system.

Applied to skin, it helps minimise inflammation, calms rosacea, and cures acne.  It has antiseptic qualities which is very healing for the skin.

I have tried the above pictured product by Ayuuri Natural products. It is called turmeric and papaya face mask.  The mask is quite creamy in texture, and dries onto the skin. It can then be removed after 20 minutes.  Ayuuri Naturals is available online and in some UK supermarkets (Asda being one).  I found it to be a nice mask to use, and would recommend it for acne prone skin to keep spots at bay (as it dries on to skin and contains oil absorbing kaolin clay).

Ayuuri Naturals masks contain no parabens, SLS or mineral oil. They are not animal tested and are free from artificial ingredients.

The list of ingredients for this products shows a range of natural fruit extracts such as licorice, goji berry and papaya. Papaya is a good natural ingredient to use for exfoliation without being too harsh.  I will be using other products in this range – reviews to follow.

Other uses for turmeric –  Turmeric is a brilliant spice for teeth whitening!.  This may actually sound strange, as anyone who uses turmeric knows how much it stains everything it comes into contact with. However its stain removal properties on teeth are quite impressive (i’m still not sure how and why it works, but it does)..

Make a paste of turmeric with a tiny amount of water. Use a separate toothbrush and dip it into the paste, brush the teeth (concentrate on the front ones) for at least 2 minutes.  Do this once a day over 3-4 days.  After the 4th day you may notice that any yellow staining from tea/coffee will have faded and teeth will look a few shades whiter.

Summer favourites I ❤

For people who usually stay away from BB creams, I have found the perfect one. I have a few BB creams which I never end up using because I find them too heavy and cakey. I also haven’t found one that gives the right amount of colour for my asian skin tone.

The one that I found that suits my skin is Maybelline dream fresh BB cream. As the name suggests it does leave my face feeling quite fresh as it has a light consistency compared with other BB creams. It sinks in well and blends in with my skin colour, without looking obvious. It’s quite moisterising, I do not need to wear a separate moisteriser underneath which I normally do with BB creams. Another benefit of using this BB cream is that it has a high spf (30), which is a bonus. It means I can wear it with non spf moisterisers or on its own. Overall I have been quite impressed with this one and have been wearing it regularly. This is widely available (bought mine from superdrug) and i think it was around £7-£8.

My favourite moisteriser for the summer (i’m taking a break from my usual Boots time delay as it doesnt have a high SPF) is Soap & Glory Feel Good Factor moisteriser Lotion. I like this one because it sinks in instantly and you don’t have to wait for it to sink in. It moisterises skin extremely well, only a small amount is needed and even dry skins wont need to re-apply. It has a high spf (25) which is my standard minimum for summer months. It smells pleasant although not strong and has a nice looking tube. It comes in 50ml and I would say it lasts ages as i’ve been using mine for the last 3 months and haven’t come to nowhere near the end of the tube. I bought this on sale (it was around £7 in boots, I think normally it is around £11).

May Challenge!!

001I have accumulated many products over the years, some of which I found are still lying around in my draws years later. So this week, I set myself the challenge of binning, passing on, or using all of my half full products. Sifting through them, I came across my Elemis TriEnzyme face wash which I bought around 6 years ago!! (no joke).. Of course, any active ingredient in this died a death a long time ago. However I didn’t throw this one away, and as I’ve just finished my face wash thought I would attempt to finish this.
So when I first bought this I didn’t think it was anything too special. It claims to clear up spots and blemishes, and at the time I bought this I was suffering from a bit of acne and acne scarring. It is also supposed to clear skin of dead skin cells and even skin tone. I used this a couple of times before it started making me come out in spots, caused really dry flaky skin and was a bit harsh. It went to the back of my draw to sit there with other stuff I was disappointed with.

Now 6 years down the line.. ive been using this now for 1 week, and it is not having the same reaction on my skin how it did previously. No spots so far, and if anything, it is leaving my skin more clearer looking from the first time I used it. Make up goes on a lot easier, and for those who wear make up on most days, this will probably cut down the need of wearing so much as it does make the skin look a lot clearer within days. I’m actually having trouble believing this is the same product that I thought was useless…

The only downside to using this now is that it still has a bit of a drying affect (as its taking off dead skin every time you use it) and for that reason I don’t use this twice a day, but prefer to use as a night-time wash only.

This face wash does not get rid of dirt and make up, a separate cleanser should be used to remove dirt, then this is used straight afterwards. It foams up really well.
It also requires you to use sunscreen in the day time when using this.

So I’ve learnt this week that over six years skin changes quite a bit, and product that were not suitable before may show totally different results down the line.
I like this product so much now that I’ll probably continue using it!
I would recommend trying this in a small size first as it can work out expensive buying the normal bottle and it is one of those product which either doesn’t agree with your skin, or you will love it.

Cosmopolitan 4 way nail buffer

cosmopolitan 4 way nail buffercosmopolitan 4 way nail bufferHi! I bought this nail buffer a few month ago on a whim.. I’ve always been very low maintenance when it comes to nails and just wanted a file so that my nails would stop breaking and chipping off. The nail buffer is more than just a buffer, it does 4 jobs in one and is good for those wanting really shiny nails without having to apply anything on them. It’s great for people who are low maintenance and prefer the french manicured look.

The buffer is a square block with 4 sides and each side has a different function. It is really well designed with the description of what each side does written on it. The 4 steps to using this buffer is file, buff, smooth and shine. The shine that it leaves isn’t as good as some more expensive buffers, it lasts a couple of days, but it retails for around £3-£4 so not much to complain about there.. It’s still a good buffer for under £5 and will probably last a while before it will need replacing.

Liz Earle Product Review

Liz Earle I first came across Liz Earle as a skincare brand when I found out that my sister uses products in the range. She had been using the moisturiser for a few years and I thought I would give it a try myself. Back then the only place that I could find that sold Liz Earle in my hometown was House of Fraser, but nowadays it is available in John Lewis, QVC shopping and in the Liz Earle store. (also available on to buy on the Liz Earle website).

Over the years I tried most of the products in the range, some I found brilliant and continued to use, others didn’t suit me so much. Here are my thoughts and review for each product.

Cleanse & Polish
The star product of the range, This cream cleanser comes with a muslin cloth which should be rinsed in hot water and used to remove the cleanser. The cleanser removed all traces of dirt and makeup brilliantly, even very stubborn mascara. It has a nice fragrance and smells quite fresh. Once this is rubbed into the skin it emulsifies even more, making dirt and makeup melt off. The muslin cloth that comes with this is off good quality, i’ve had mine for several years and they get softer and softer every time they are washed. I have used other muslin cloths, however they were not half as good as this one. Using the cloth also keeps the skin clear from spots as it also gently exfoliates the skin. Dead skill cells is one of the main causes as spots and acne, therefore the cleanser would suit those wanting clearer and spot free skin. I love this cleanser, and each year it has won awards, which shows how popular it is.

Skin Repair Moisteriser
I’ve done a pros and cons list for this which should sum it up, I’ve used the one for normal skin, and I have used several jars of this over the years.
Pros – nice texture, feels very comforting and smells nice, gets rid of dry patches, skin feels thicker, stronger and firmer. Good ingredients that are natural.

cons – short-lived effects – after using for couple of weeks mY skin got used to the product and I wanted to switch to something else, no spf at all, sometimes too oily and made me come out in spots. Better for dry skin, maybe I should have used the light version.

Daily Eye Repair
One of my fav products in the range, this eye cream really suprised me as I did not think that I would like it as much as I do. It is white in colour and comes in a really good tube with a narrow nozzle. THis is good as it makes it easy to control how much comes out of the tube. You only need a really small amount as it spreads amazingly well and a little goes a long way. Once on, it makes eyes look instantly brighter, this is due to the light reflective particles in the cream. It has a spf of 10, and it is a mineral spf rather than a chemical one. This is great as chemical sunscreens can cause allergies when applied to the eye area, and also, chemical sunscreens are sometimes seen as unsafe and a cause of ageing. It comes in 10ml which is small but fine as a tube will last a couple of months at least.

Eye Bright
use this on cotton wool and apply to eye area for 10-15 mins to refresh tired eyes. It works well, doesnt sting, and I feel that it should be used regularly for any benefit to be gained from this. It lessens the look of dark circles and can be used as a last minute treatment to make eyes look bright and fresh.

Smoothing Line Serum
Another favourite product for me! I use this as a light night moisteriser on some occasions because it works like an overnight mask and good to use the night before a big day to make the whole face look brighter and more radiant. However, it is a night eye cream, I feel that I can’t comment on its effects as an eye serum as I ended up using this on my whole face! I will be using this when I run out of my night cream and will post a review once i’ve used it.

Superskin Concentrate
I used this product and wasnt amazed by it, I think it would be good to use if you have dry skin concerns. It smells nice and is worth a try if you are an oil user, however I found other oils that sank in a lot quicker and where there was a visible difference.

Brightening Treatment Mask and Deep Cleansing Mask
I use both of these and they are good to use before an evening/day out as the effects can be seen instantly. Skin looks clearer and brighter with both of these.
